Kitten & Puppy Nutrition by Dr. Katy Nelson

Bringing a new puppy or kitten home for the first time is so exciting, and there are many things you need to plan for ahead of time. One of the most important is how you will nourish your new little one. Below are answers to some commonly asked questions from new pet parents:

How long does it take for my puppy or kitten to grow into an adult?

This answer is very dependent upon the size your pet will be as an adult.  Kittens and puppies grow at an incredible rate from birth to about six months old. After six months, kittens and small breed dogs’ growth rate starts to slow down as muscles begin to fill out and bones begin to harden.  Large and giant breed dogs, however, can continue to grow for up to two years! The best way to ensure your pet’s growth stays on the right track is to provide them with regular veterinary care and proper nutrition.

I don’t like the food my puppy or kitten was eating before, how do I make a change?

For the first week or two after you bring your new pet home, it’s best to continue feeding them the same type and brand of food they were eating before. Changing their diet too quickly can cause gastrointestinal upset.  Once they’re settled and you’re ready for a change, gradually increase the new food and decrease the old food over a period of 7-10 days or until they are eating 100% of the new food.

Do I need to buy special kitten or puppy food?

Typically kitten and puppy food contains higher levels of protein and fat per serving than adult food to help support their rapid development, but buying it is not necessary. If a pet food is labeled “complete & balanced for all life stages” it is appropriate for young and old alike. However, you will need to adjust the amount you feed so be sure to talk with your veterinarian about the proper amount for your pet’s life stage and carefully read the recommended feeding guidelines on the packaging.

How much should I feed my puppy or kitten?

In general, kittens and puppies from two to fourteen months old should be fed up to twice the normal adult requirement. Every couple of months, as their growth rate slows down, you will need to reduce the amount they eat to keep them from becoming overweight. To sustain their energy levels even throughout the day, I recommend splitting their daily feeding amount into three or four smaller meals. Giving your new bundle of joy treats is okay in moderation, as long as they do not account for more than 10% of their daily caloric intake.

As always, be sure to check with your veterinarian before making any changes to your pet’s diet.  Best of luck with your new addition!

6 Reasons to Feed Your Family Fresh

The philosophy is so simple: fresh, real food is better for our families and ourselves. The power of fresh food has so many positive effects it’s hard to count them all. This week, our friend Dr. Katy gives us her 5 reasons why fresh is best for the whole family. Take it away, Dr. Katy!

Fresh food tastes better!

My dogs Papi and Eddie have always been great eaters, but I had never seen them be so excited for food as when they began to eat Freshpet Select Chicken and Vegetable rolls. The meals are made with ingredients that come from balanced, local sources, making for especially well-nourished and especially tasty ingredients. I know that I enjoy a meal of fresh ingredients much more than something from the shelf, and Papi and Eddie would agree!

It keeps us looking and feeling great

Foods like vegetables and fruits are rich with vitamins and antioxidants that make are wonderful for my family’s us feel like a million bucks every day. And, as we all know, the better we look, the better we feel. Fresh proteins and more fatty acids help promote smooth skin, help with muscle tone and it just makes us feel fantastic.

It energizes us!

One of the biggest differences that I notice when eating fresh food is how I feel after finishing a fresh meal. The food is highly digestible and nutrient dense, so my body easily turns the food into energy for me. And the same definitely goes for my kids and dogs. They’ve got levels of energy that they haven’t had since they were puppies. As far as Fresh Starts go, feeding them fresh food has been a huge difference.

We feel healthy all the time

There’s no such thing as a cure-all for sickness. But I believe that since making the commitment to feeding my whole family fresh food, we’ve all had less sickness and allergies to deal with. The ingredients in fresh food are jam-packed with nutrients that are healthy and strengthen our bodies to fight off illnesses and allergens. Feeding fresh food and keeping my family healthy is a choice I will make 100% of the time.

I feel good about what I’m feeding my family

There’s a great feeling that I get when I know that I’m nourishing my household with the best food available for them. It means that I’m taking good care of them by giving them meals that are tasty and will keep them healthy for a long time. I’m happy as long as my family is happy and healthy!

Eating and feeding fresh has made all the difference in my family and countless others. And the best part is that it’s never too late for you to start! Visit the Fresh Start site to begin giving your pets fresh, natural food that they’ll absolutely love.

Summertime for the Sochi Pups

The summer season is in full swing, even in Denver, Colorado where Gus and the Sochi Pups reside. That means lots of outdoor playtime for the happy family. Here’s a glimpse of what the Sochi Pups’ summer break is like from Gus himself:

When I met the pups in February, it was in the thick of the winter in Sochi. It’s a little surreal seeing them here in Colorado in the warm weather, but here they are. And I couldn’t be more excited to be with them during their first summer.

These guys have a busier social schedule than I do. We’re constantly on walks, playing in the park right by my house or taking long hikes through the woods and water. And Jake and Mishka enjoy every single second of it. You can see the smiles on their faces when they’re running around in the trees, grass and water. They’re real outside dogs. I guess they’re starting to take after me!

One of our favorite things to do is go out to the park with my buddy Robin. While they’re there, they get right into running and playing around with the other dogs. They both being around other dogs, but Mishka is definitely the more social one. He could probably stay at the dog park all day if we let him.

At the end of the day, when the two are tired from all their outdoors time, they plop down on the same bed and fall right asleep. I don’t think I’ve seen brothers get along this well.

The only thing that will wake them up from their slumber is when I head to the fridge. When they hear that fridge door open, they run over to the kitchen immediately, hoping to get some Dog Joy Turkey Bacon Treats or Dog Joy Sweet Potato Treats that they’re both obsessed with. I’m glad that they’re eating well. The food gives them the energy they need to play outside to their hearts’ content.

They’ve come a long way since the first time we met in Sochi, and I’m just excited to be with them for every step.

Acts of Kindness #9: Welcome to the Freshpet Family, Carlton!

It’s always exciting to bring in a new member of the family, and that’s exactly what we did this past week. Our own Katie welcomed Carlton Banks Ellis, a 92lb German/Dutch Shepherd mix, into her home.

And like any typical new parent, she hasn’t been able to stop gushing about her new “baby”! She loves to show us new photos of Carlton, giving us updates about his adventures of learning how to walk on a leash, and telling stories about his first thunderstorm at home.

It’s wonderful to see Katie and her boyfriend Willem giving Carlton the affection and home he really deserves. Prior to being adopted, Carlton was rescued from a kill shelter in New York City in May by the organization Ready for Rescue. While under the care of Ready for Rescue, it was discovered that Carlton had cancer in his right paw, right underneath his pads, making it difficult for him to walk. Thankfully, the cancer was operated on and he has fully recovered into a healthy pup.

Katie and Willem met Carlton about a month ago at a boarding kennel in Bedford, New York and fell in love with his goofiness and sweet attitude immediately. In just a week’s time, they brought him home with them to Jersey City. During his first weekend at his new home, Carlton was introduced to our Vital Beef and Bison recipe which he loved, immediately eating around the kibble to get to. Katie says he’s also really fond of the Dognation Beef Treats, which they’ve been using to help train him.

Since moving into his new home, Carlton’s been (literally) a huge joy to have around. He even visited our offices last week. He loved roaming around and meeting everyone. He’s quite the socialite, making sure he spent time mingling with someone from every department. We look forward to mingling with him around the office again soon!

For Katie, it’s been a wonderful experience being able to give such a great dog like Carlton the love and care he needs. We’re happy to bring him into the extended Freshpet Family!

Acts of Kindness #8: Get Well, Beau!

The pet community is comprised of some of the most supportive and caring people around. That’s why this week’s Act of Kindness involves not just us, but every single one of you!

We met Wade and his pup Beau after they wrote to us saying how much Beau loved his new Freshpet Select recipes after discovering it at their local grocery. After trying Freshpet for the first time, the picky eater in Beau was gone and they haven’t looked back since.

Unfortunately, Wade wrote to us again recently saying that Beau had fallen ill. Beau is in the best of care, with his vet and his dad Wade right by his side. But he’s battling a tough infection, and things aren’t looking good at the moment. Wade has shown tremendous resilience, but he cares so much for his Beau and doesn’t want to lose him. He’s keeping up hope, and has asked that we keep him and Beau in our thoughts and prayers as he fights the infection.

So, that’s where you come in!

We want to show Wade and Beau that the Freshpet community is pulling for him! Share your well wishes for them in the comments, and we’ll make sure they hear each and every single one of them. Together, we’ll all let Beau know that we’re standing right behind him in his time of need.

Acts of Kindness #6: Freshpet’s Newest “Intern”

All of us that work at Freshpet are pet lovers of the highest order; it’s almost a requirement in order to be employed here! So when one of us gets the chance to take care of a pup or kitty, even for a little while, we immediately volunteer. And that’s exactly what our Social Media Manager Zack did this past week.

Jackson is a little terrier mix adopted from the North Shore Animal League in Long Island, New York. When he was first adopted, Jackson was a bit skittish and territorial. But he’s become quite the little social pup since his adoption a year ago. But nowadays he spends his time living in Brooklyn with his mom. This past week, she was headed off to Hawaii on vacation and asked Zack to take Jackson for 10 days. As a dutiful godfather to Jackson, he immediately said yes.

For the next couple of days Jackson stayed in an East Village apartment, where he waited patiently for Zack to come home every evening. But a small apartment is no place for a puppy to spend all his time, so Zack decided to bring Jackson to the Freshpet offices with him as an unofficial “intern” of the digital marketing team. The whole office welcomed him with open arms, with everyone coming over to meet the newest member of the extended Freshpet family.

Jackson spent his two days at the office running around, exploring, and (of course) eating a lot of delicious Freshpet recipes! Though he is generally a finicky eater, he couldn’t get enough of our Freshpet Select Chicken, Vegetable and Rice recipes and loved chewing on our Dog Joy Turkey Bacon treats throughout the day. Needless to say, he was sent home to his mom with a goodie bag from his new friends at Freshpet. We can’t wait until the next time he visits!

Fresh and Happy Dogs – Gus Kenworthy and the Sochi Pups are Feeding Fresh

The Sochi pups are well on their way to a Fresh Start. Gus has been keeping us diligently updated on their progress, and we’re seeing some happy, healthy dogs that are looking better and better.  But don’t take our word for it, here’s the latest update from Gus:

“It’s already been a few weeks since we started feeding Freshpet’s recipes to the dogs. They absolutely love the food. It’s getting to the point where I’m followed to the fridge every time I go to the kitchen. They know where I keep the good stuff!

They’re fans of everything that I have fed them, but they are really into the Freshpet Select Chicken Vegetable and Rice recipe. A full meal lasts about 3 seconds before the dogs lick the plate clean. They were already great at eating, but I’ve never seen them actually enjoy their food like this.

And talk about their energy levels! Mama, Jake and Mishka have never been more vibrant. Playtime, walks and runs are their favorite thing in the world. They love to be outside more than anything and I can really see how happy it makes them. And they are looking great on the outside as well. They were already good looking dogs, but their coats are shinier than ever and their eyes are nice and clean.

It’s been a real pleasure to be able to give these special dogs what they deserve. It’s crazy to think that just a few months ago they were living a much different life. But I’m proud that we’ve been able change their lives for the better. “

Don’t forget to give your pet the Fresh Start they deserve, too! Get started here. With each participant in the program, we’ll make a $1 donation to the Humane Society International to help more pups like Mama, Mishka and Jake.

Freshpet Acts of Kindness #3: Home for Life

Freshpet Acts of Kindness #3: Home for Life

Our mission of bringing the power of fresh food to pets takes shape in many ways. Each day, we work hard to do what’s best for the pets in our families, the people who love them, and the planet that we live on. Each week, a member of our Freshpet family will be doing something to give back to deserving pets and their families. This week, we’re featuring a truly wonderful home for a special group of pets.

Home for Life is a small, but mighty group of people that are dedicated to giving a permanent home to animals that have been rejected from rescue or shelter programs.  Home for Life offers a home to older animals and animals with medical conditions or disabilities. For the nearly 200 animals that live at the Home for Life sanctuary in Minnesota, it is truly a blessing.

On any given day, the residents of the sanctuary are able to play, eat, and sleep all while feeling completely secure and cared for. Most importantly, they are given the love and affection that they deserve.

When we were reading through the stories about each animal, one in particular stood out. Benjamin Button is a cat that was rescued from a home where he was being underfed and neglected. The rescue group found him in dire straits, with one eye completely shut and other various injuries. He was eventually rescued and brought to the Home for Life sanctuary where he’s made an amazing recovery, and looks younger and younger by the day.

We wanted to give this adorable kitty some of our own Freshpet love, so we are sending them cases of our Freshpet Select Roasted Meals for Cats, and we made a donation to the sanctuary in his name. We absolutely love the people at Home for Life and the mission they’re embarking on. Check out their site for more details.

Spring Into the Season with Your Pets

Since it’s now officially spring, we can finally start thinking about spring cleaning. After all, it is always better when everything is fresh and new. While you’re cleaning your house and emptying out your closets, remember to include the dogs and cats of your family in the process. The winter months were just as long for them! So here are a few simple, yet crucial things you can do to include your dogs and cats in the spring cleaning.

Grooming
We don’t need to tell you how good it feels to get a fresh cut. The same should go for your dogs and cats. Take them to the groomer to give them a good wash and trim. Now that it’s getting warmer out, their winter coats should be left behind. Your dogs and cats will look and feel lighter. There’s nothing like celebrating spring with a new ‘do!

Exercise

Winter pounds are a real thing for both you and your furry family. After all those months of being cooped up inside, it’s time to get outside and moving. Whether you’re going for a jog or a bike ride, bring your pup along. They’ll be more than happy to run with you. There’s no better workout buddy! Check out more exercise tips here.

Travel Plans

The arrival of spring means that summer vacations are right around the corner. If you’re planning to head out of town and planning to leave your pets behind, make sure to arrange their boarding options soon. As is the case with your own vacation, the earlier you plan the better!

Visit the Vet

There’s no better time to pay your veterinarian a visit than in the springtime. He or she will give your dogs and cats a thorough check-up and prepare them for the outdoor months of spring and summer. April is Heartworm and Lyme Disease Awareness Month as well, so make sure to get your dog back on his preventative medication, because the warm months bring on those pesky bugs.

Restock on Toys, Leashes, and Collars

Isn’t it nice when you get a new wardrobe for the spring? We recommend treating your dogs and cats the same way. Chances are, after a long winter season, their toys and collars will have gone through some wear and tear. The start of spring is a good time to throw the old away and invest in some replacements. Your pets will always appreciate a whole new slew of toys to play with.

Clean up their Beds

In a perfect world, dogs and cats would be able to make their own beds. Since that isn’t the case, your pets beds should be included on your spring cleaning list. Run their bed covering or sheets in the washer and dryer, just make sure to use non-scented detergent and softener. Scented versions may irritate your pet’s
