“Allergic to Everything, Jake” Finds Something He Can Finally Enjoy
Jake had been at the Southwest Washington Humane Society for just over two months before his now owner, Rachel, came to visit him. “He was a little skinny but looked pretty heathy otherwise. He was the sweetest dog there and when I saw him, I knew he was coming home with me,” says Rachel.
Jake seemed to always be itchy, but after a month, the scratching became critically worse. He began to lose hair and developed sores. The first thing they decided to do was change up his diet to see if he was experiencing a food allergy. After many vet visits and allergy tests, they realized Jake not only had food allergies but also environmental allergies. Certain plants and grass would affect him, as well as rice, peas, wheat and many proteins, which are typically in the vast majority of dog foods.
“With long list of things to avoid… the only food we could find in the store that he could eat was Freshpet. So Freshpet it was and he loves it,” explains Rachel. Jake’s favorite Freshpet recipe is Vital Grain Free Beef and Bison as it has unique proteins and is free of grains. It is a meal that leaves him able to enjoy mealtime, allergy-free.
With his food allergies in check, Rachel and his family bring him to have regular allergy shots, and make sure their home and yard are free of plants and grass that he isn’t allergic to. He also regularly gets a bath 1 to 2 times a week to help with the scratching.
Jake is now enjoying a summer, full of energy, outdoors. He went from being a skinny 83 pounds to a healthy 102 pounds! We’re so proud of him and so happy that he no longer has to suffer.
