The Houlton Humane Society is a 501c3 no kill animal shelter. The shelter is run by director CJ Virgie. CJ puts her heart and soul into running the shelter. She brings her vast experience as an ACO from the midcoast area to the shelter. CJ is a strong advocate for the trap & neuter program and organizes several spay/neuter and vaccination clinics. She works around the clock and on her days off to provide knowledgeable and caring support for animals in need. On any day you might find her bottle feeding a litter of tiny abandonded kittens, rushing a sick cat to the vet, answering the phone that rings off the phone, consoling the owner of a found cat, walking the shelter dogs, and reuniting a lost pet with its owner. The kennel is spotless and the cats & dogs receive the best care. I have known CJ for four years as a friend, a volunteer, and as a board member. The shelter has a strong local presence and the board is actively involved in fundraiser events. The shelter often runs at maximum capacity especially in kitten season.
