The Sochi Pups’ Big Reveal

It’s been nearly seven months since Gus Kenworthy first met the Sochi Pups and began the journey to give them a new life. Gus-and-Stick Back in May, we were lucky enough to meet Gus and the pups, and offered to help them start their new life on the right paw, with a diet of fresh, all natural food and treats. Now, the pups are happy, healthy and thriving in Denver. After three months, Gus reveals how a Fresh Start has made all the difference to Mishka and Jake: I can’t believe it’s been six months since Robin and the Humane Society International helped me bring Momma, Mishka and Jake home. The dogs have become my best friends, and I can’t imagine life without them. They’ve grown up so much, and it’s funny to see how different their personalities have become. Mishka loves to play all the time, and she’s a huge cuddler. Jake is a bit calmer. He loves sneaking off to be alone, especially when I give him a Freshpet Sweet Potato chew. When I first started feeding them fresh food, Freshpet gave me a scorecard to help track their transformation. At first I wasn’t sure I’d see much difference, but looking back now I can see how far they’ve come. They have so much energy and are always ready to play, they are strong and athletic and maintain a good weight. I can’t wait to get them out into the snow with me as I start training- I know they can handle it. Their coats are shiny and soft- they still feel like puppies. And, their eyes are very clear. Jake always gets compliments! Best of all, they are always stoked to eat. I can’t even go to the fridge to take out a snack for myself without them running into the kitchen looking for a treat. People are constantly coming up to me and asking how they can adopt dogs like this, and I tell them- you shouldn’t have to. You can go and get a great dog at your local shelter. There are so many rescues that need to be taken care of right here in the U.S.

We can’t wait to see what’s next for all of the Kenworthy clan; we know there are good things to come. We’re also happy to announce that because of you, we’re able to donate $5000 to Humane Society International to aide in their Street Dog program. Thank you from all of us at Freshpet for following the Sochi Pups’ Fresh Start.

Love at First Sight- Gus Kenworthy starts Fresh with the Sochi Pups

Our mission at Freshpet is to spread the power of fresh food to pets everywhere. We are wholly dedicated to improving the lives of pets and their parents, because they deserve it. Our Fresh Start program is part of that mission. We’re encouraging pet parents to incorporate more fresh, all natural food into their pets’ diets to see what the power of fresh can do.

Freshpet is making it easy for all pet parents to give their dogs and cats a Fresh Start. Simply visit freshpet.com to receive a coupon, downloadable scorecard to track your pet’s health improvements over time, and helpful tips from Dr. Katy Nelson, veterinary nutrition expert. And because Freshpet believes every pet deserves fresh, for each Fresh Start participant they will donate a fresh meal to the Humane Society International.

As part of the program,  we’ve partnered with Olympian Gus Kenworthy who was so touched after witnessing the multitude of stray dogs in Sochi, that he brought a mom and her pups home with him after his silver medal win. Now Gus is feeding the Sochi pups Freshpet food and treats and is using Whistle Activity Monitors to keep track of them as they grow up healthy and strong. For the next few weeks, Gus will be sharing updates of his and the pups’ journey.

Gus shares the story of how he came to be the proud Papa of three loveable pups , and why fresh food is so important:

Getting to compete at Sochi was one of the highlights of my life so far. I was so lucky to be amongst some of the best athletes in world. What I didn’t expect was to meet the puppies while I was there. I saw the pups with Mama right outside of the Olympic Village and right away knew I had to bring them back with me. I had read and heard so much about the Sochi strays, but once I actually met them it was a totally different story. It was puppy love at first sight I guess you could say.

That day, I spoke to my buddy, photographer Robin Macdonald, who was in Sochi with me, and we both made a promise to take those pups home with us to Colorado where we’d give them the best possible lives. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

It took a few weeks of back and forth with countless officials and government offices, but I finally had the pleasure of welcoming Mishka, Jake and Mama to Colorado. I can’t thank Robin enough for staying behind to make sure the pups made it over here safe and sound and the Humane Society International for helping the whole process along. It was more difficult than we thought it would be, but it was worth in the end when we finally got to see each other again in New York.

Mama and the pups are loving Colorado. Mama is spending most of her time in Telluride with my Mom and Mishka and Jake are growing faster than ever. I was fortunate that it did not take long at all to potty train the pups when we arrived in Colorado.

We’d already spoken to a few pet food companies, but what I really liked about Freshpet was their commitment to using all-natural and healthy ingredients for the pups. They got in touch with me asking if they could send over some food for the dogs. I can’t wait to see what kind of effect this has on the dogs. Like I said, the pups are already great at eating, so I’m excited to see what kind of appetite they have for their Freshpet food.

U.S. Olympic Silver Medalist Gus Kenworthy and the Sochi Pups are Going Fresh!

Back in February, the hearts of pet lovers everywhere were captured by the story of U.S. Olympic Slopestyle Skier Gus Kenworthy, and his adopted dogs from Sochi, Russia.

Gus met a litter of puppies living close to the athlete’s village in Sochi. The avowed animal lover fell in love with them immediately and pledged to bring the mother and her puppies home with him. Sadly, two of the pups didn’t make it, but the remaining three dogs were brought to the States with the help of Gus’ friend and photographer, Robin Macdonald, and the Humane Society International.

Fast forward to the present, and the Sochi pups are living in Denver with Gus and Robin, adjusting to their new life. They’re loving their new home in Colorado and are looking and feeling better than ever. Check out the Sochi Pups on Instagram to see Jake, Mishka, and Mama sleeping, playing and loving their new lives.

We were so inspired by this story and wanted to help in any way we could. Fortunately, on a Today Show appearance in February, Gus met our friend Dr. Katy Nelson and was introduced to Freshpet. We decided then and there that those amazing dogs deserved to eat real, fresh food, and Gus agreed. So we started the Sochi pups on a fresh food diet by sending Gus and Robin a supply of Freshpet meals and treats. And (not surprisingly) they have enjoyed every last bit of it.

According to Gus, the Vital Balanced Nutrition Chicken Recipe with Peas, Carrots & Brown Rice has been their hands-down favorite. He can’t even make it to the fridge to get his own food without the dogs rushing to him, expecting their Freshpet to come out of it! And just by looking at the photos on their Instagram, we can already tell the Freshpet Effect is starting to take place: beautiful, smooth coats, clearer eyes and happy faces!

But there’s more! We’ve got a special announcement regarding Gus and the Sochi pups. Check back in with us on June 16th to be one of the first to hear about this very exciting program and how you can join in.
